Recently, four members of a Hindu group allegedly entered the Taj Mahal carrying saffron flags and prayed to Lord Shiva. They claimed that the 17th-century Mughal mausoleum was actually a much older Hindu temple called Tejo Mahalaya and it was time the “temple” was returned to the Hindus. This was by no means an isolated incident. Last October, a similar attempt was made by right-wing activists, and even earlier, attempts were made to perform puja at the site.
